History of the Sewer System

From historical sewer systems to modern engineering, Conmach produces high-durability concrete pipe machines for efficient, sustainable wastewater infrastructure.

Early Sanitation Challenges and Environmental Impact

Although water supply has always been the most basic requirement in human life, waste water disposal has become mandatory after a long period of time. Wherever settlements, cities, and towns were established, waste and sewage polluted streets, roads, and other open areas, which was unavoidable. This caused outbreaks of diseases and a hotbed of unpleasant odors. As a result, the ground water was polluted and became unsuitable for drinking

Ancient Infrastructure: From Knossos to the Roman Cloaca Maxima

The first sewer system was created between 3000 and 2000 BC under the Palace of Knossos, located on the island of Crete. Brick channels with terracotta lining (a mixture of clay and soil) pipes were used to remove rainwater and waste.

The sewer system that the Romans made allowed used water to be moved outside the city limits and was called the maxima cloaca, a system still in use in modern Rome, 2,500 years after its construction. The water from here flowed into the Tiber river (in the city of Cologne, located in Germany, was also built in Roman times, you can still walk inside these underground channels).

Industrialization and the Modern Sanitation Revolution

Since there was no more advanced technological development over the next thousands of years, urine flowed through rivers, lakes, and seas until the end of the 19th century. With industrialization and urban development, efficient waste water disposal has become a necessity.

Evolution of Concrete Pipe Manufacturing in Turkey

Until the 1980s in Turkey (before mechanization), a concrete pipe formed by hand was used to remove sewage. Concrete pipes made with machinery have significantly improved the quality and ease of use, but were not strong enough, the strength and sealing have improved significantly with the development of the engineering sector, which began the production of concrete pipes in the 1990s, taking into account the importance of environmental protection, environmentally friendly materials were used.

Modern Concrete Pipe Machine Solutions by Conmach

Currently, we continue to manufacture concrete pipe machines with Conmach brand quality at the factory in Corlu, Tekirdag. Please contact us for more information.

During the municipality's infrastructure works in the Düziçi district of Osmaniye in Turkey, the 1600-year-old sewage system of the historical city of Eirenopolis was unearthed.
